I Am Singaporean
When I started this blog, I wanted it to be purely, well mostly, in Chinese. But to show my admiration and respect, and extend my support for mr brown, mr miyagi and Co., I'll make an exception. Here's mr brown's original iamsingaporean podcast. And here's my own version (sorry, no podcast lah, I still waiting for my MacBook to arrive leh) :
I have an English name given to me by my parents. But I'm neither ang moh nor a Christian.I grew up responding to 2 names : my Chinese name spoken in Cantonese by my grandparents, and my English name by all others.
I speak decent English and Mandarin. But should the occasion arise, I will swear in a combination of English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien and Melayu.
I love roti prata kosong, dipped in sugar or curry. All the better if washed down by a steaming cup of 'tiow yu' (钓鱼). (Note : Tiow yu (钓鱼) is kopi-tiam-speak for Chinese Tea).
I ROM'd in 2003 during SARS. I could only invite 10 persons to witness it and everyone of us wrote down our contact details and had our temperatures taken. But I'm not considered married till I went through the customary wedding, which finally took place in 2005.
My hubby loves to zhng his car, but not before consulting the LTA's website.
Every penny of my salary goes into paying for my part-time degree course. Not so that I can be an elite, but just to afford a better quality of life.
I hope to start a family upon completion of my course. And inculcate in my child the pride in being a Singaporean, despite all the misgivings in this little red dot.
I go by the moniker yanzi (燕子) on the Internet. I am Wong Wai Yin Linda.
I am Singaporean.
So say we all...
So say we all.
